[Under] Currents: Reflections on COVID-19 Communication

3rd Session Poster The BA Communication and Media Arts program of the University of the Philippines Mindanao launches the second session of the "[Under] Currents: Series of Virtual Academic Lectures on Contemporary Communication and Media Matters" on March 26, 2022 (Saturday). This session carries the theme, "Reflections on COVID-19 Communication" and will feature talks by Prof. Raymundo Pavo (College of Humanities and Social Sciences – University of the Philippines Mindanao) and Asst. Prof. Nelfa M. Glova (Department of Humanities – University of the Philippines Mindanao). The program will start at 1:00 PM and end at 4:00 PM via Zoom.

Prof. Pavo is an expert and dedicated scholar in the field of philosophy and social sciences. His research interests include Philosophical Methods, Qualitative Methods in the Social Sciences, Collingwood Studies, Gender and Development, and Urban Night Markets while Assistant Professor Glova is a well-reputed and dedicated researcher in the field of Health Communication. She also serves as a Research Consultant for various projects under the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) and PCHRD-DOST.

Launch of SARS-COV-2 Genomics Biosurveillance in PGC Mindanao and Visayas

YOU ARE INVITED TO THE LAUNCHING OF THE SARS-COV-2 GENOMICS BIOSURVEILLANCE SERVICES IN PGC VISAYAS AND PGC MINDANAO

Themed, "Drawing on Collective Strengths for Pandemic Preparedness" --the expansion of the genomic biosurveillance capacity in Visayas and Mindanao was established to increase the number of weekly samples from around the archipelago for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and to address the logistical challenges of having the samples be transported from labs around the country to the genome center in Diliman.

This is made possible through the support of the Department of Health, Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, University of the Philippines System, and the Philippine Genome Center together with its satellite facilities in Visayas and Mindanao, as well as funding support from the Department of Budget and Management.

Prof. Lyre Anni Murao appointed chancellor

The University of the Philippines Board of Regents (BOR) has appointed Prof. Lyre Anni E. Murao as the sixth chancellor of UP Mindanao during its 1368th Meeting on 24 February 2022.

During the Search for the Chancellor process, Prof. Murao proposed her vision paper with the title, “We Rise: UP Mindanao at the Forefront of 21st-Century Transformation.” (https://bit.ly/3Hri6DK) Her vision for UP Mindanao is captured by the word RAISE, an acronym for Respect & integrity, Academic freedom & accountability, Inclusivity & collective significance; Social responsibility; and Excellence.

Prof. Murao is a faculty member of the Department of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies (DBSES) and the current Program Director of the Philippine Genome Center-Mindanao (PGC-Mindanao). She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Medical Science in Infection Research conferred by Nagasaki University, Japan. She earned her Master of Science in Microbiology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and her BS Molecular Biology degree from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Prof. Murao’s term officially begins on 1 March 2022 and concludes on 28 February 2025.

UP MINDANAO, UPMMPC sign MOU for GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT

The University of the Philippines Mindanao (UP Mindanao) and UP Madayaw Multi-Purpose Cooperative (UPMMPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the collaboration in advancing and mainstreaming gender and development (GAD). The UPMMPC is a duly registered cooperative composed of UP Mindanao full-time faculty, administrative staff, REPS (Research, Extension and Professional Staff), and NGS (non-government service) personnel. Both parties agreed to cooperate in developing, designing, implementing, and evaluating GAD activities that would benefit the UP Mindanao constituents and its partner communities. The two parties had been working together for the past few years, but this is the first time that such collaboration is being formalized. The implementation of the MOU is specifically tasked to UPMMPC’s Gender Committee and UP Mindanao’s Office of Gender and Development (UPMin GAD). The representatives in the ceremony and exchange of MOU are Chancellor Larry Digal for UP Mindanao and Board of Directors Chairperson Jo-an Garcia for UPMMPC. Witnessing the ceremony are (L-R) UPMin GAD Staff Analiza Macias, UPMin GAD Coordinator Marilou Montiflor and UPMMPC Director Michael Gatela, Director Jackie Lou Tagubase, and Director Analiza Fulvadora.
