Alumni and students of the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao’s BS Computer Science (BSCS) program emerged champions of the Techstars Startup Weekend—Smart Cities Davao pitch competition hosted by Poplar Homes on August 14-15, 2022.
Christian Vincent Binobo’s pitch for AutoCare, a car management and service locator app, topped the judges' criteria for its clean look and detailed business model created by its seven-person computer science team.
Freeroads, an app for vehicle parking space booking, and WeSibol, an app for the vegan and vegetarian community and marketplace, won second and third place. Kris Kyle Quinco, also a computer science student, and Mark James Saguimpa, a BS Agribusiness Economics student, delivered the pitches for their respective apps.
The five other participating teams pitched their proposed digital solutions to pressing problems. H2Queue aims to minimize drinking water pipeline leaks, and E-waste aims to generate points and rewards for segregated waste disposal. Alerto offers safety through users’ reports of fire, crime, and other hazards, even when offline. DMedFinder app is a one-stop medicine locator that uses Blockchain technology, and Knowbill focuses on savings in utility bills.
The panel of judges was composed of Shopsuki founder Jennica Siang, Poplar Homes director Keenan Ugarte, Linux Foundation’s Mark Maglana, New Energy Nexus’ Brenda Valerio, and DICT’s Albert Gabriel.
Techstars Startup Weekend—Smart Cities Davao is part of the first Davao Startup Week organized by IDEAS-Davao, a non-profit consortium of private and public universities, agencies, and firms dedicated to building a startup ecosystem in the region.

DAVAO CITY - Officials of the local government unit of Surigao City (LGU-Surigao City) Executive branch and Sangguniang Panglungsod members took an Executive – Legislative Agenda (ELA) training from UP Mindanao’s Department of Architecture to equip them to formulate a comprehensive multi-sectoral development plan for 2022-2025. Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves L. Dumlao III (in the photo above), an alumnus of UP Mindanao’s Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, led the LGU team in the three-day training on August 8-10, 2022, in Davao City.  “The formulation of the plan is mandated under Section 106 of the Local Government Code of 1991,” the mayor said. The LGU will use the learnings from the said training to further strategize the growth and development of the city’s urgent concern for socialized housing in the next 100 days of the mayor’s administration.

Asst. Prof. Minerva Rosel, the graduate program coordinator of the Diploma/MA in Urban and Regional Planning program, facilitated the workshop, assisted by fellow faculty members, Asst. Prof. Ryan Songcayauon and Asst. Prof. Micah Amor Yares.  Prof. Isidoro Malaque III, Ph.D., provided overall supervision as Department of Architecture chairperson.

“This training counts as one of engagement or extension services,” said Prof. Malaque. “We are using our proficiency in urban and regional planning as well as socialized housing promotions to guide the city’s task to rehabilitate the area after the effects of Typhoon Odette,” he said.

The Philippine Federation of Japanese Government Scholars (PhilaJames) celebrated Philippine-Japan Friendship Day 2022 with an exhibit on the theme “Strengthening Friendship Through Artworks.” Dr. Mercidita Villamayor, a dean of Bukidnon State University, and Atty Malu Viva, both Philajames scholars, opened the exhibit on July 30, 2022.

The exhibit shows the twin themes of Filipino and Japanese life through the paintings of visual artist Teody Boylie Perez, a Philajames scholar and associate professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao Department of Humanities.

The Filipino paintings feature Prof. Perez’s recurrent themes of life in marginalized communities and the indigenous people. “Fisherman’s Village,” at eight feet wide and three feet high, is the biggest work on display. In addition, his GSIS painting competition finalist, “Life Goes On,” is featured in the exhibit.

The Japanese paintings feature rural communities and ancient locations, which the artist produced during his six-year residency as a masteral and doctoral scholar in Japan.

Prof. Perez also delivered two lectures on the historical development of art in Japan and the Philippines compared to the Western world to further enrich appreciation of the Philippine-Japan relationship.

The exhibit, the artist’s 15th solo exhibit, is located in his residence and gallery in Ulas, Davao City.

Prof Perez has exhibited his paintings and artworks of Davao community life in Japan, China, and the USA, earning him a Datu Bago Award from the Davao City government.
