UP Mindanao faculty members receive appointments as UP Scientists

Four faculty members of the University of the Philippines Mindanao were issued appointments as UP Scientists for 2023-2025 under the UP Scientific Productivity System (SPS) during the 1393rd meeting of the Board of Regents on September 26, 2024.

Prof. May Anne Mata, PhD, from the College of Science and Mathematics, and Prof. Larry Digal, PhD, from the School of Management, were promoted to UP Scientist 3.

Assoc. Prof. Vladimer Kobayashi, PhD, from the College of Science and Mathematics, and Assoc. Prof. Jonathan Cagas, PhD, from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, issued appointments as UP Scientist 1. 

Prof. Cagas transferred from UP Diliman to UP Mindanao in August 2024.

The UP Scientific Productivity System (SPS ) was established by the Board of Regents in August 2005 to support the development of science and technology and to encourage and
reward scientific productivity in UP. Deserving scientists shall be given the rank "UP Scientist" for a period of three years with a monetary award, the UP Scientific Productivity Award.

The University of the Philippines – Mindanao participated in the "CY 2024 Davao City Walk-The-Fault Activity" organized by the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DCDRRMO) in partnership with DOST-PHIVOLCS and Office of the Civil Defense XI from September 24-27, 2024. The UP Mindanao personnel who participated in the Walk-The-Fault activities were Assistant Professor Maynard Usares from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), Mr. Invictus Lorenzo, Mr. Roberto Cardinal, and Mr. Quincy Felizcuso, all from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Administration (OVCA).

UP Mindanao Bakery delivers baked goods for food tasting

UPMin Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) presented its bakery products for a food tasting to the UP Mindanao Executive Committee on its September 30, 2024, meeting. TTBDO Chief Researcher Melvin Pasaporte and the TTBDO team presented the products, which included Meat Bread, Torta Bread, Pan de Sal, Croissant, and Cookies, which the food tasters described as tasty and crunchy.

The food products were produced in the UP Mindanao Pilot Bakery located in the Kalimudan Complex, which was launched on April 17, 2024, in collaboration with the government agencies DOST XI, DTI XI, DSWD XI, and FDA XI, the industry partners Cacao Culture, Prifood Corporation, Lucia Dulce, Glory Foods, Unifrutti, and Banana Town, and Davao Del Sur State College and Davao Del Norte State College.

The UP Mindanao Bakery operation manifests the UP Mindanao TTBDO's commitment to the Mindanao Innovation Initiative, an element of the UP Mindanao Strategic Plan 2022-2025, by fostering an innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to bridge the gap between academic research and industry needs. It aligns with the UP Strategic Plan on Creating Innovation Hubs, Partnerships, and Public Service. It addresses the sustainable development goals of Industry Innovation Infrastructure and Responsible Consumption and Production. 

Student-Athletes Introduced and Recognized

UP Mindanao's top student-athletes were honored at the Flag Ceremony on September 30, 2024. The student-athletes were introduced individually alongside their teammates and their local, national, and international competition events. The roll call recognized their hard work, dedication, excellence, and outstanding achievements in their sports events. A token of appreciation from a sponsor, in the form of backpacks from Hawk Topbond Philippines Inc., was distributed. Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao handed out the backpacks, assisted by VCAA Annabelle Novero, Dean Jhoanna Cruz, and the DHK faculty. The Department of Human Kinetics extended its gratitude to Hawk Topbond Philippines for the generous sponsorship, which served as a reminder of the collaborative efforts to uplift student-athletes.

UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao led the opening of the 3rd Mindanao Technology Business Incubator (TBI) Summit, on the theme, "InnovNation: Accelerating Davao's Global Disruptive Potential." 

The summit, held on September 27, 2024, at the Pinnacle Hotel in Davao City, brought together business incubators, accelerators, and other startup enablers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The Summit featured keynote speakers, educational sessions, and networking opportunities, all aligned towards democratizing access to technopreneurship support in Mindanao.
